A festive Trieste welcomed Costa Venezia, the first new unit built by Costa Cruises for the Chinese market.

The ship, which arrived from the nearby Fincantieri shipyard in Monfalcone, remained docked in the city for 3 days, before leaving for its first vernissage cruise.

During the stop at the Julian city, the ship was baptized by the godmother, the little known European public Gan Beiye and her family. In reality, this is not a show character or artist, but one of the long-time customers of the Italian brand, since 2011 to be exact. According to the company, his choice represents the ideal family to which the Costa Venezia ship product is aimed.

The highly anticipated baptismal ceremony took place at the on-board theater and was broadcast on large screens in different parts of the city, to allow citizens to participate as well.

Before the baptism ceremony, Costa Venezia was flown over several times by the National Aerobatic Team, or the "Frecce Tricolori". All the guests present and citizens were able to witness different passages of the well-known flying aerobatic team, which colored the air space above the classic white, red and green color.

For dinner, an exclusive gala menu prepared by the Italian chef Umberto Bombana (three Michelin stars) delighted the palates of the more than 2000 guests on board.

The long day of celebrations culminated with an intense fireworks display, accompanied by music fired at various points of the nearby Molo Audace.

Speaking of the Costa Venezia, 323 meters long, with a gross tonnage of about 135,500 tons, it is able to welcome over 5200 guests inside, inspired by the furnishings and colors of the city of Venice.

This new and modern unit is the first dedicated by the Costa company to the Chinese market. On board there is no shortage of solutions specially designed to please the demanding oriental clientele such as its unique interiors.

All Chinese guests who will have the pleasure of discovering this brand new unit will symbolically make a leap into distant Venice. Numerous on-board environments recall, in their colors and symbols, some of the most popular and appreciated places in the lagoon city. The main atrium that will welcome future guests sees a huge winged lion soaring reminiscent of St. Mark's Square. There are also two real gondolas made by the artisans of the Squero di San Trovaso, one located inside the main restaurant and the other along the bridge dedicated to the promenade with many specialty shops and restaurants.

As mentioned above, there is no shortage of solutions that will make Chinese guests feel at home, such as a wide choice of Chinese cuisine, the typical karaoke and inevitable parties.

After the first vernissage cruise, on 8 March Costa Venezia will bid farewell to the city of Trieste and the European market to direct its bow eastward for a long 53-night positioning cruise, in the wake of the famous Marco Polo. As everyone remembers, the vernissage cruise and the inaugural cruise are the only departures available for European and American guests to discover the new ship up close. From May 18, 2019, Costa Venezia will be dedicated exclusively to Chinese guests, offering cruises to Asia departing from Shanghai.

A few months later and the spotlight will be on the future Costa Smeralda eco flagship expected in Italy in October 2019. A second unit, also dedicated to the Chinese market and sister ship of Costa Venezia is currently under construction at the Fincantieri plant in Marghera, awaiting service in 2020, it too will have interiors inspired by a well-known Italian city of art.
