Costa Smeralda takes its name from the popular tourist coast of Sardinia, it is the first LNG (liquefied natural gas) motor ship owned by the Carnival Corporation. The 6,518 passenger ship is currently under construction at the Meyer Turku shipyard in Finland and will be launched in October 2019. LNG is the cleanest fossil fuel in the world, it will be stored in special tanks on board the ship and will be used to generate 100 percent of the energy needed for navigation and on-board services, thanks to dual-fuel hybrid engines. The use of LNG is a great innovation in terms of environmental impact, as it will significantly reduce exhaust gas emissions, in particular sulfur, nitrogen and carbon dioxide.
