KATAKOLON

The Greek city of Katakolon, with a population of around 600, is your typical cruise destination in the port: waterfront cafes, shops selling t-shirts, hats and jewellery, and a small beach designed by swimmers and sprayers. But that's not why it makes it a destination for cruise ships. They arrive here because Katakolon serves as a cruise port to the ancient Olympia, the birthplace of the Olympic Games. 40 minutes by road from Katakolon, it will not only be a bus ride but a real journey back in time to thousands of years ago. When you get there, you will walk on the UNESCO World Heritage of the ancient Olympia and walk on the footsteps of ancient Greek-Roman wrestlers, disc and javelin throwers, runners and jumpers along which they ventured for the glory and favor of the Gods. Standing next to the massive columns, and with the tales of a good guide, you can imagine the once magnificent temples, the athletes who train in the gym and the runners who prepare themselves on the track. Alexander the Great, Black, Plato and Aristotle are among those who have watched the games from where you will find yourself Tourists flock to the site and its associated museums, including the Archaeological Museum of Olympia, a treasure trove of sculptures and sculptures that once adorned the ancient structures and the Museum of the History of the Ancient Olympic Games, where you can learn about the original competitions. If you have already visited the Ancient Olympia, there are other places of interest in the area, including the spectacular temple of Apollo Epicurius and the medieval fortress of Chlemoutsi (Hlemoutsi) - or look for the golden sandy beaches on the Gulf of Kyparissia.
