SPLIT

The first thing that strikes you on arrival in Split, Croatia, is how busy it is. The quay is lined with local boats, and there are hordes of young backpackers embarking or disembarking from boats to the islands in one of the most beautiful destinations in the Balkans. Larger ferries and cruise ships enter the main terminal and from there it's a short but uphill walk to the Old Town with its market and magnificent Diocletian's Palace. Split's youthful fun arises partly from its status as a university town and partly from its location as a starting point for exploring the beautiful coastline and islands of Dalmatia. So it's not surprising that it has such a young population and accessible bars and vibrant nightlife. But older travelers arriving on cruise ships shouldn't feel left out, as there's plenty to enjoy in this delightful port, from elegant pastel-colored tea shops and excellent restaurants to even better shops. There is also a museum with the works of Ivan Mestrovic, one of Croatia's greatest sculptors.
