Europe's northernmost and westernmost capital is a delightful destination, part of the old is Norwegian-style, the other part modern, with its own eccentric personality. The roll and elf souvenirs found in gift shops are fitting mascots for a decidedly playful city.
More than half of Iceland's population lives in (or near) Reykjavik, in one of the smallest cities in the world - about 190,000 people. Cruise ships are increasingly making their way to Reykjavik from the end of May to the beginning of October, especially during the summer months when the daylight literally lasts all day long. Visitors and residents also seem to stay awake, playing golf, strolling through the picturesque streets of the compact city, drinking Gull beer and cycling along the waterfront.
